Clean and Green Business Coalition
As part of the original Clean and Green Campaign, Roanoke officials announced in March 2008 that the city would create a consortium of some top local businesses and employers to be pacesetters in implementing environmentally sound practices that would support the city’s Clean and Green mission. By joining the city in monitoring greenhouse gas emissions, recycling, developing sustainable business plans, and practicing conservation in business routines and processes, the private sector is demonstrating true leadership in environmental stewardship.

Each participating business was asked to take the following actions:

• Conduct a carbon inventory
• Encourage conservation through business practices
• Purchase environmentally sound products and supplies
• Designate a staff member to serve as a champion for the environment on behalf of the business

In November 2008, the Coalition announced a goal of collectively reducing its carbon emissions by 4 percent per year for 5 years. In April 2009, the group astonished everyone by announcing it had already achieved a reduction of 13 percent!

The Clean and Green Business Coalition is currently co-chaired by City Council Member Court Rosen and Stan Breakell, Chief Executive Officer of Breakell Construction Inc. Other members include:
