Save A Ton

As part of its ongoing commitment to being Clean and Green, the City of Roanoke is teaming up with Roanoke County, the City of Salem, and the Roanoke Valley-Alleghany Regional Commission in the campaign called Save-A-Ton. Partners have established goals for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions. The Save-A-Ton campaign is encouraging every household to join their local governments in this effort and find ways to reduce their own annual carbon emissions by one ton – and reduce household energy costs in the bargain.

The average household generates approximately 20 tons of direct carbon emissions each year, primarily through home energy consumption and vehicle use. Saving one ton is a goal most households can reach by making a few simple changes. Some examples include using compact fluorescent light bulbs, turning your heat down while you’re not at home, keeping your tires properly inflated, and combining trips in the car to streamline drive time.

With approximately 100,000 households in the Save-A-Ton project area, if each one saves a ton, that’s a huge reduction that can make a real difference in the health of our environment. You’ll also notice that saving a ton can save money for your family!
